Campaign Update

William H. GatesThroughout the course of Campaign UW: Creating Futures, we have been talking about the power of people working together to accomplish great things. The evidence of that power is all around us, but profoundly so at the University of Washington. Your support of Campaign UW has brought us within reach of our $2 billion goal sooner than expected. This certainly is cause for celebration, but along with this success comes the realization that we need to do even more to give our students every opportunity to excel in academics and in life.

You will read in this issue about some new developments here at the UW that will help us dramatically increase our support of our students’ educational aspirations. The Husky Promise is our commitment to ensure broad access to the UW for Washington state residents; Students First (see cover feature) will help the UW to fulfill the Husky Promise.

Since the launch of Students First on November 1, our friends have responded energetically — and with more than a little creative flair. At the end of November, my friend Dan Evans, former Regent and former state governor, did some fast walking for UW students by participating in the Seattle Half Marathon, directing the pledges and donations he raised to Students First. This is the sort of collaborative approach that has defined the success of Campaign UW to date.

As we begin a new year , I am grateful for your support of Campaign UW and the students, faculty and programs it benefits. Because of you, we are on track to open the doors of this institution wider than ever before. Thank you.

William H. Gates
