A Newsletter for Friends and Alumni of the University of Washington
Volunteer Spotlight

From his office on Seattle’s South Lake Union, Scott Redman (‘87) can see the future. He has witnessed the University of Washington’s increasing presence in the developing neighborhood, and he believes that growth serves as a signal of the University’s future.

“The breadth of activity, research, and innovation at the University is incredible,” says the executive vice president for Sellen Construction. “The UW is poised at the dawn of a new era with amazing potential as an economic driver of our region
and as a global leader in environmental and health issues.”

As chair of the UW President’s Club and Annual Giving Committee, Redman has good reason to be interested in the UW’s future. He has spent much of his life around the University. His father, Rick Redman (‘65), played football for the Huskies, and his family often visited the campus when Scott was growing up. He returned to the UW as a young man to earn a degree in political science and then worked on several political campaigns before joining the business that his grandfather founded in 1944.

Redman renewed his UW connections in 1995, when a family friend asked him to join the UW Foundation Board, a volunteer organization that promotes private giving to the University. Through his work with the UW Foundation, he says, he has gained a new understanding of the importance of private support.

Redman applauds the efforts of past President’s Club donors, saying that they were absolutely forward-thinking when they started raising funds for the University more than 30 years ago. Today, he hopes to build on that legacy of support and inspire a broad cross-section of community participation. “We are thinking creatively about how to increase the University’s support at the grass-roots level,” he says. “We hope to engage the next generation of community leaders in the life of this great university.”
