A Newsletter for Friends and Alumni of the University of Washington
Campaign Update

William H. GatesA new academic year at the University of Washington brings with it a fresh crop of students, and this year the University is seeing even more new faces on all three of our campuses. With UW Bothell and UW Tacoma now offering four-year baccalaureate programs, the University is expanding its reach and fulfilling an important part of its mission to serve and educate the people of our state.

The new students coming to our campuses this fall have a wide range of opportunities for learning and discovery, for conducting research with outstanding faculty, and for scholarly achievement in top-ranked programs. Many of these opportunities are made possible through contributions from you — the University’s friends and alumni. In this issue you will read about some of the ways your support is enhancing the excellence of the UW by supporting the work of faculty who are breaking ground in exciting new fields like nanotechnology, by instigating a transformation of our creative writing program, and by giving our actors-in-training the promise of a bright new performance space in the years ahead. With these gifts and many others, you continue to create opportunity for our students and faculty, who are always at the core of all the great things going on here.

As we continue to make steady progress toward our $2 billion Campaign UW goal (see chart below), I am grateful to you for all that you make possible by supporting scholarships and fellowships, faculty appointments, new buildings and programs. Your gifts of time and assets are creating vibrant futures for the people of Washington state and beyond. Thank you for your support.
