Fueling discovery through innovative programs

Innovative programs at the University of Washington's schools and colleges help students, researchers and faculty take a fresh look at the challenges facing our community. Numerous programs have been created or enhanced by support from Campaign UW.

Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation
The UW's new Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation will help policymakers, researchers and others better allocate limited resources to achieve optimal results for health care. Dr. Christopher Murray, a world-renowned health economist was recruited to become the director of the new institute. The research center, supported by a major grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will conduct independent, rigorous evaluations of health programs worldwide. UW Bothell Center for Student Entrepreneurship
The UW Bothell Center for Student Entrepreneurship was founded in 2006 to help students become successful entrepreneurs by creating their own innovative start-up companies or participating in small dynamic companies. UW Bothell has created an entrepreneurship fund to support student startups with small seed grants and guidance. Several companies representing a variety of fields, including information technology, financial lending, dance, specialty foods, clothing, manufacturing, are partners with the Center for Student Entrepreneurship. The Dream Project
Started in 2004 by undergraduate students, The Dream Project matches UW students with first-generation and low-income students in Seattle area high schools to help them with the college admissions process, including preparing for the SAT, filling out applications, and finding scholarships. The program has two focuses: assisting high-school students and educating UW students about social mobility. UW students involved in the project attend a class once a week about educational opportunity and social mobility. They also meet in smaller groups once a week at a local high school to assist students. Private support has helped The Dream Project expand. This year, the project began presenting "Live the Dream" scholarships to local high-school students attending the UW. Support The Dream Project | Learn More
