Faculty-Staff-Retiree Campaign for Students

Can I name the endowment?
Yes! You can name it for yourself, pay tribute to a family member, teacher, staff member, or friend, or use the endowment's purpose as its name.

Am I eligible to participate if I have retired from the UW?
Absolutely!

I am a widow/widower of a retired faculty/staff member; am I eligible to participate?
Absolutely!

How can I fund a new endowment for student support?
The University accepts commitments of cash, stock, honoraria, and payroll deductions which meet the minimum donor funding requirements for the endowment: $5,000. For the purposes of matching, stock transfers will be matched on their legal value (the average of the high and low value of the stock on the day the transfer arrives at the UW).

Can I make payments over time or do I have to pay the minimum $5,000 gift all at once?
If you prefer to pay your gift over time instead of making an outright gift, you can pledge the amount you want your total gift to be and pay it in increments. If you are a UW employee, you can use payroll deduction to make your payments. Your pledge must be fulfilled over the course of five calendar years (or less).

If I use payroll deduction, how much will be taken from each paycheck?
A $5,000 pledge can be fulfilled at $41.67 per paycheck for five years* A $10,000 pledge can be fulfilled at $83.34 per paycheck for five years* *based upon a 12-month pay period. This amount can be adjusted for nine-month appointments, as long as your annual contribution totals $1,000, and your pledge is fulfilled in five calendar years or less.

Can I make my gift or pledge payments with a credit card?
Yes.

Can I create a Campaign for Students endowment by naming the UW as a beneficiary in my will?
A bequest commitment through your will can be used to augment an already established endowment, but not to create a new one. Once your endowment is established, you may continue to contribute to it through various mechanisms, including planned gifts.

Are gifts-in-kind (property, equipment, etc.) allowed in the Campaign for Students?
No.

Can I join with others to fund an endowment through this Campaign?
No. Each person must create a separate endowment. If several donors wish to support a common purpose, they can establish separate endowments with like purposes and direct them to pay into the same operating fund.

Is there a limit on the endowment amount?
No. The hope is that donors will continue to build their endowments over time to increase the benefit to students. However, to enable as many faculty, staff, and retirees as possible to take advantage of this opportunity to establish endowed student support funds, there is a cap on the University match to gifts made by each donor.

What is the limit on matching funds?
The maximum match is $10,000 per donor.

When will matching funds be applied to my gift?
If you make an outright gift, it will be matched immediately. If you make a pledge, it will be matched when you have made contributions totaling $5,000 to your fund.

If I establish an FSR endowment with less than $10,000, can I add to it and have my additional gift(s) matched?
Yes. This is referred to as an "incremental match'. Whatever difference remains between your initial pledge of $5,000 or more and $10,000 will be matched, as long as you make any additional gifts or pledges by December 31, 2008.

If I have already established an FSR endowment with a gift of $10,000, can I establish a NEW FSR endowment and have it matched?
No. The matching component of the FSR Campaign is donor-based. Each donor may have $10,000 matched by the University. You can establish two endowments of $5,000 and the University will match both of them. Or you and your spouse/partner can each pledge $10,000 for an endowment resulting in a $20,000 match by the University, as long as your spouse/partner also is a UW faculty or staff member, or UW retiree.

Will corporate matches, such as those offered by a spouse's employer, count toward the $5,000 minimum commitment?
Yes.

Can gifts previously made be moved into a matchable fund?
No. The program applies only to new commitments made after May 1, 2005.

How does the University invest endowment gifts?
Gifts to endowments are invested in the University's Consolidated Endowment Fund (CEF). Much like a mutual fund, the CEF pools assets for investment purposes. However, each named endowment retains its own purpose and account number and you will receive annual reports that enable you to monitor your fund.

Does a student program support fund support tuition costs?
If your primary goal is to support tuition, you should create a scholarship fund, not a student program support fund. However, if you wish to create a fund for student program support, which can be used for a variety of educationally related expenses, such as conference fees, travel costs, inviting speakers in for educational talks, etc., you can include tuition in the list of things your fund will support. Supporting tuition should not be the sole purpose of a student program support fund.

When will the Faculty-Staff-Retiree Campaign for Students end?
Your commitment must be made by December 31, 2008, the end of Campaign UW: Creating Futures. If you make a pledge by this date, you still have five years (until December 31, 2013) to fulfill your pledge. Gifts and pledges you make after December 31, 2008 will be gratefully received, and may augment an established FSR endowment, but will not be matched.
