Campaign Priorities for the School of Public Health & Community Medicine

The School of Public Health & Community Medicine is a powerful ally in the fight against disease and injury. Consistently ranked by US News & World Report among the top schools of public health in the country, the School trains men and women from widely varied backgrounds-from nursing and medicine to statistics and economics-to analyze disease and injury trends, recognize health and safety risks, promote health, and design interventions to protect the population as a whole. The School is recognized world-wide for the research conducted through its five departments, more than 30 research centers, and partnerships with such prominent institutions as the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Group Health Cooperative, and Seattle Biomedical Research Institute. As the only accredited school of public health north of Berkeley and west of Minneapolis, the School has an enormous impact on the health of Washington state and the northwest region.

As part of the UW's comprehensive campaign, the SPHCM has identified several key fund-raising priorities:

  • Capital Support: The construction of new facilities for the School is a crucial campaign priority: without significant expansion of on-campus space for research, training, and collaboration, our capacity to meet rapidly growing public health needs will be severely limited.
  • Student Support: To continue to attract top students, to help deserving students afford tuition and other expenses, and to ensure that all students have the opportunity to excel in their work, the School is seeking support for graduate fellowships.
  • Faculty Support: Without a strong, talented, and committed faculty, we will not continue to have a world-class School. As state support declines and national competition for the nation's best faculty heats up, we must redouble our efforts to attract and retain stellar faculty and researchers. Private support for endowed chairs and professorships is critical to these efforts.
  • Program Support: The School is a complex and dynamic institution that must respond quickly as the world changes around us. Private gifts for program support are essential if the School is to maintain excellenceand respond to critical public health needs as they emerge.
  • Annual Support: Annual gifts for current use help provide the School with valuable resources that can be directed to students, faculty, and programs. Your unrestricted gift to the Public Health Excellence Fund allows the Dean to provide critical funds to meet the School's emerging needs and opportunities as they arise, improving the excellence of the School and the University.
