About the College

The College of Architecture and Urban Planning is teaching new generations of design, construction management, and urban planning professionals to create healthy buildings and livable communities. At the core of the College's curriculum, programs, and research is a commitment to preparing students to have a positive impact on the built environment by:

  • Awarding scholarships to undergraduate students in Architecture, Construction Management, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Design and Planning to help them discover their passions and develop their talents.
  • Providing fellowships for Master's and PhD students to ensure educational opportunities for gifted individuals who would otherwise have to forego graduate-level study.
  • Investing in the best faculty to give life to new ideas, inspire our students, and advance knowledge in such critical areas as sustainable design and construction technologies, urban ecology, and growth management.

During Campaign UW, the College seeks funds to support students, faculty, and research with a Campaign goal of $19.15 million. To learn more about our specific Campaign priorities, please contact Carolyn Wennblom, Director of Development.

Annual Support

This past year the College of Architecture and Urban Planning welcomed Dr. Daniel S. Friedman FAIA as its new dean. Dean Friedman's arrival builds on the talents and initiative of an accomplished academic community: "The achievements of the College continually demonstrate the transformative power of design, in the broadest possible sense, regionally and globally, across every environmental discipline. I feel especially grateful for the chance to participate in its growing contribution to our professions and to the UW vision." Private support helps realize this vision by supporting the College's priorities:

  • Creating a more dynamic, interdisciplinary experience for students with the Digital Commons at Gould Hall. This student-centered, technology-rich facility fosters teamwork and innovative problem solving through cooperative use of the latest technological tools. Creative collaboration with their peers allows our students to develop the team and leadership skills vital to professional success. A new CAUP 3D visualization lab, now in the works, aims to further strengthen interdisciplinary application of advanced digital media.
  • Providing students with opportunities for hands-on learning through our design/build and community-based studios. These types of direct engagement with actual projects and clients deepen our students' understanding of what they are studying and help prepare them for the challenges they will face when they enter the "real world."
  • Keeping the doors of higher education open for deserving students by providing increased support through scholarships and fellowships. The cost of education is often a critical factor for students in choosing which school to attend. Ensuring educational opportunities for all students enriches the College and, ultimately, the associated professions through a greater diversity of experiences and thought.

With your gift, you play an integral role in the College's continued success, becoming a partner with Dean Friedman, the faculty, and staff in creating the best possible educational experience. Your unrestricted gift to the College of Architecture and Urban Planning Dean's Fund for Excellence allows the Dean to provide critical funds to meet emerging needs and opportunities as they arise, improving the excellence of the College and the University.
