About the Campus

In just a few short years, the University of Washington Tacoma has become recognized as an outstanding example of how an urban university can revitalize a community.

With an award-winning historic campus, strong enrollment growth, and a talented faculty and staff, UWT is transforming the South Sound through the power of education.

Private contributions play a special role in UW Tacoma's continuing development. Whether providing scholarships for deserving students, enhancing instruction, or improving facilities and equipment, private contributions create a margin of excellence that state support alone cannot provide.

Gifts to the Tacoma Excellence Fund allow the Chancellor to meet emerging needs and opportunities as they arise. Gifts to the Freshman Scholarship Fund provide financial assistance to students entering UW Tacoma from high school. Gifts to the UW Tacoma Scholarship Fund provide assistance to upper-division students transferring to UW Tacoma from community colleges and to graduate students.

The UW Tacoma Chancellor's Club honors those who give annually at the $1,000 level or more. Donors who belong to the Chancellor's Club receive special recognition and have unique opportunities to be involved with the campus and each other. Chancellor's Club donors have the satisfaction of knowing that they helped to strengthen the campus and provide a first-rate education for students. Donors who give annually $2,000 or more are invited to join the University of Washington President's Club.

Annual Support

Many UW Tacoma students could not pursue their diploma without scholarship support. But thanks to the support of our alumni and friends, more than half of our students receive some form of financial aid.

  • You can help make a tremendous difference in the life of a student with a donation to the UW Tacoma Scholarship Fund, which provides general scholarships for UW Tacoma undergraduate and graduate students across all programs.
  • The Global Honors Program serves students in all undergraduate majors who wish to enter careers directed toward the needs of our planet during a time of incredible world-wide transformation. With your gift to the UWT Global Honors Excellence Fund, you join hands with students who recognize the demand for a more complete and sophisticated understanding of global issues.
  • For those who would like to provide more broad-based support, the Chancellor's Excellence Fund offers donors an opportunity to give funds that can be used at the discretion of the Chancellor to cover immediate or unexpected campus needs and to promote the continued growth of the campus.

Please support UW Tacoma students by making a gift to the fund of your choice this fall.

UW Tacoma strives to create innovative learning opportunities and real-world experiences for its students. However, without the help of our alumni and friends, many students would not be able to afford to continue their education. Scholarships make a real difference in the lives of students like these:

  • Joseph Akuei always knew that an education would transform his life-and he found that transformation at UW Tacoma. At age 5, Joseph survived a military attack on his unprotected village on the banks of the Nile and joined thousands of other orphaned boys who collectively became known as the Lost Boys of Sudan. After 13 years in refugee camps, Joseph found his way to Tacoma and worked his way through high school and Tacoma Community College by stocking grocery store shelves. At UW Tacoma, he dedicated himself to studies and consistently made the dean's list. Joseph graduated with a degree in Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences in 2007.
  • Kristen Shinohara was inspired by a friend to help blind people interact better with their environments. As she was working toward her master's degree in computer science at UW Tacoma, Kristen used her technical skills to develop design innovations for the blind, including a hand-held CD scanning device that reads a CD's name and outputs it in audio or Braille. Through support from alumni and friends of UW Tacoma, students like Kristen are making the world a better place before they even graduate. Kristen went on to be hired as the first specialist in "human-computer interaction" at a local technology company.
  • Yesica Trujillo came to UW Tacoma seeking a challenge, and found the power to make a difference. While lobbying in the state legislature and educating Hispanic and Latino Washingtonians about getting involved in politics, Yesica discovered that when one person takes action on a small scale, the result can influence thousands. Now she's considering running for public office, and has been selected to participate in a White House leadership program for women. Yesica graduated in 2008 with a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences.

You can help make more success stories like these possible. Please support UW Tacoma students by making a gift this fall.
