The School of Public Health & Community Medicine is a powerful ally in the fight against disease and injury. Consistently ranked by US News & World Report among the top schools of public health in the country, the School trains men and women from widely varied backgrounds-from nursing and medicine to statistics and economics-to analyze disease and injury trends, recognize health and safety risks, promote health, and design interventions to protect the population as a whole.
The School is recognized world-wide for the research conducted through its five departments, more than 30 research centers, and partnerships with such prominent institutions as the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Group Health Cooperative, and Seattle Biomedical Research Institute. As the only accredited school of public health north of Berkeley and west of Minneapolis, the School has an enormous impact on the health of Washington and the Pacific Northwest.
School of Public Health students are committed to helping the community, but they need our help first in order to achieve their goals. The School of Public Health Endowed Fellowship provides students with tuition support so they can focus on their education. Thanks to our alumni and friends, it is growing steadily and robustly.
- Alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the School of Public Health have provided funds for this endowed fellowship, the first of its kind for the School. It is uniquely inclusive, because it will be available to any graduate student in the School who wishes to apply.
- This permanent fund will provide support for generations of students, and can be used for tuition, living expenses, computers, travel to educational meetings and field work, or other needs.
We prepare graduates to transform the world as they pursue careers that promote better health, prevent illness and injury, and ensure more efficient and cost-effective health care. Your gift to the School of Public Health Endowed Fellowship allows students to devote their time to research and studies. Here are some examples of the great things our students are accomplishing:
- Kelley VanBuskirk is a first-year Master of Public Health student in epidemiology, with a background in malaria research. Her work focuses on development of a vaccine against the live stages of malaria parasites and on genetic susceptibility to malaria infection. Kelley will do laboratory and field based research in Thailand, with the goal of developing technology that can be used to create an effective vaccine.
- Lillian Benjamin is a graduate student working on a Master in Public Health in Global Health, a Master in International Studies, and a certificate in International Development Policy and Management. Her research includes maternal and child health; and displaced populations and African Studies. She is performing field work in Lambaréné, Gabon hospital's Community Health Outreach Program which provides village-based health care, including maternal/child health, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, TB education and follow-up, and malaria prevention and treatment.
- Anne Piantadosi is a graduate of the Department of Global Health, Pathobiology Graduate program. She chairs the Board of Directors of Students in the Community. The organization's goal is to improve the health of the underserved. Its flagship program serves formerly homeless men and women living at the Aloha Inn, a transitional living facility. At the Inn, Anne teaches classes on diabetes, assesses patients in clinic, and organizes training programs. She also empowers the group she serves by including residents in program development.
