Current Priorities for the School of Pharmacy

Better Pharmacy. Better Health.
Pharmacists are becoming one of the most accessible and most trusted allies in healthcare. Their ever-expanding role calls for diverse skills in pharmaceutical science, patient care, health informatics and business management.

The School of Pharmacy has earned a global reputation for training programs and community service that artfully blend these capabilities, extending pharmacists' reach to the frontlines of patient care. But we can do more. We know that we possess the ideas, expertise, and partnerships to take our profession in new directions. We will widen access to healthcare. We will transform the business of pharmacy. We will sway public policy.

Private gifts that support innovative practice initiatives and advanced pharmaceutical research are an investment in solutions to problems affecting us all:

  • Each year, about 60,000 Americans die of vaccine-preventable diseases.
  • Costs due to drug-related problems like errors, misuse, or dangerous interactions exceed $177 billion a year.
  • Diabetes afflicts 120 million people worldwide, and the World Health Organization estimates that number will skyrocket to 300 million by 2025.
  • By 2010, the number of community pharmacists will grow just 9% versus a 47% increase in the number of prescriptions dispensed.

Gifts to the School will support cutting-edge research programs. Together, our efforts will inform and guide the future of pharmaceutical care.

Faculty Support

The UW School of Pharmacy takes great pride in its faculty. High-caliber faculty members who provide cutting edge instruction, and who capitalize on the latest technologies and research, are the keys to world-class education and innovative problem-solving. Our faculty generate in-depth instruction for our students, promote interdisciplinary analysis and drive the future of pharmaceutical research.

Proof is in the numbers. According to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy's 2008 rankings, the School of Pharmacy was among the top three pharmacy schools in the nation in NIH funding awarded to full-time, Ph.D. faculty. The Chronicle of Higher Education ranked the U.W. School of Pharmacy Ph.D. Research Program among the top 10 out of 104 programs at state universities and elite, private, and Ivy League schools. Your support enables our nationally recognized faculty to lead the way in innovative teaching and research.

Student Support

Meeting the healthcare needs of the 21st century requires the finest minds in pharmaceutical care and research. The UW School of Pharmacy is fortunate to be recognized by top applicants as one of the most innovative and sought after school in the nation. However, whether a Washington resident or an international applicant, the availability of financial support often plays a decisive role in a student's choice of schools.

Your scholarship and fellowship support enables the School to remain competitive in recruiting top candidates. It also ensures that we accept and retain the caliber of students able to undertake the challenge of leading pharmaceutical care into the future.

Program Support

The UW School of Pharmacy faculty and programs are recognized by the government, pharmaceutical industry and healthcare providers as the most innovative in the country. From advising the FDA to supporting small communities, our award-winning faculty and programs educate multi-disciplinary pharmacists and researchers who are committed to advancing pharmaceutical care in all areas of health services.

Your contribution enables our faculty and students to continue to develop and participate in important programs such as Direct Access, immunization training and legislative affairs. With the explosion of drug products on the market, physicians and patients have come to rely on the expertise of the School's faculty, who are trained to understand how drugs exert their effects, how they travel through the body, how they interact with one another and best practices of how these drugs can be supplied, safely and cost-effectively, to diverse populations.

Annual Support

At the School of Pharmacy, we are currently focused on providing student support through many channels:

  • The Dean's Fund for Excellence provides pharmacy student scholarships and direct student support. With tuition now exceeding $13,000 a year, students, especially those with families, benefit from this critical support.
  • The Institute for Innovative Pharmacy Practice ("I2P2") allows for broader pharmacist training, including in pharmacy retail management, entrepreneurship, senior care specialties, and public services. I2P2 supports pharmacists who promote creative solutions for better health.
  • The Leadership and Professional Excellence Fund supports the School of Pharmacy's Center for Pharmacy Leadership and Professional Excellence. The center fosters students' learning through workshops and seminars; supports students' research, fellowships; and publication opportunities; and develops diverse community partnerships.
  • The Pharmacy Scholarship Support Fund provides scholarship support to professional pharmacy students each year who attain superior levels of academic achievement, are active in pharmacy and leadership groups, and strive to make a difference within their communities and profession.

We strive to create innovative learning opportunities and real-world experiences for its students. But without the help of our alumni, many students wouldn't be able to afford their education. Scholarship support makes a real difference in the lives of students:

  • When Brandon Chrisopulos, '10, is not studying, he is spending most of his time playing with his two-year-old twin daughters. Because having young children and working toward a professional degree place high demands on an individual, Brandon is grateful for the scholarship support he received which allow him to worry less about finances and concentrate more on his studies. Although he is still not sure which area of pharmacy he'll specialize in, he enjoys putting his ever-growing knowledge to use by helping a diverse patient population at the Walgreens Pharmacy in downtown Seattle.
  • After receiving a scholarship, Emily Schulze, '09, became inspired not only to work to her fullest potential as a future pharmacist, but to also give back to the community and future generations of pharmacy students once she gets her degree. Emily is actively involved in the National Community Pharmacists Association both locally as senior chapter president at the UW School of Pharmacy and nationally on the Student Executive Council. "I absolutely love talking with people and providing any insights I can along the way," she said. "I hope that over my career I can make a difference, whether it is in a community or an institutional setting."
  • Thanks to support from alumni like you, we are able to help students such as John Hoekman, a Ph.D. candidate in 2010, who chose to pursue pharmaceutics because he believes the work people do in this field can make a positive impact in their own lifetimes. He now hopes a drug-delivery technology he co-invented at UW-one that delivers drugs directly to the brain to treat central-nervous-system diseases-will make just that impact. John, along with two MBA students, recently took the grand prize and best innovation prize for a total of $30,000 in the UW Business Plan Competition for a proposal to commercialize that technology. With any luck, he may make his mark sooner than he imagined.

You can help make more success stories like these possible. Gifts to the Dean's Fund for Excellence allow the School to take advantage of promising opportunities, direct funds to valuable programs, and provide critical scholarship support to deserving students.
