Campaign Priorities for the School of Pharmacy

Better Pharmacy. Better Health.
Pharmacists are becoming one of the most accessible and most trusted allies in healthcare. Their ever-expanding role calls for diverse skills in pharmaceutical science, patient care, health informatics, and business management.

The School of Pharmacy has earned a global reputation for training programs and community service that artfully blend these capabilities, extending pharmacists' reach to the frontlines of patient care. But we can do more. We know that we possess the ideas, expertise, and partnerships to take our profession in new directions. We will widen access to healthcare. We will transform the business of pharmacy. We will sway public policy. Private gifts that support innovative practice initiatives and advanced pharmaceutical research are an investment in solutions to problems affecting us all:

  • Each year, about 60,000 Americans die of vaccine-preventable diseases.
  • Costs due to drug-related problems like errors, misuse, or dangerous interactions exceed $177 billion a year.
  • Diabetes afflicts 120 million people worldwide, and the World Health Organization estimates that number will skyrocket to 300 million by 2025.
  • By 2010, the number of community pharmacists will grow just 9% versus a 47% increase in the number of prescriptions dispensed.

Gifts to the campaign will fund a new public-private Institute for Innovative Pharmacy Practice and support cutting-edge research programs. Together, our efforts will inform and guide the future of pharmaceutical care.

Campaign Goal for the School of Pharmacy: $10 million

Faculty Support

UW School of Pharmacy takes great pride in its faculty. High caliber faculty members that provide cutting edge instruction and capitalize on the latest research technologies are the keys to world-class education and innovative problem solving. Our faculty generate in-depth instruction for our students, promote interdisciplinary analysis, and drive the future of pharmaceutical research.

Proof is in the numbers. The annual 2004 AACP survey ranked the School of Pharmacy number one in NIH funding per Ph.D faculty member and number five in total amount of NIH Grants & Contracts out of 100 schools and colleges of pharmacy nationwide. Your support enables our nationally recognized faculty to lead the way in innovative teaching and research. More importantly, your support will have a profound effect on the lives of the many students who benefit from training under a talented professor and the patients that are helped through the professor's pioneering research.

Our goal: $5 million for faculty support

Student Support

Meeting the healthcare needs of the 21st century requires the finest minds in pharmaceutical care and research. The School of Pharmacy is fortunate to be recognized by top applicants as the most innovative and sought after school in the nation. However, whether a Washington resident or an international applicant, the availability of financial support often plays a decisive role in a student's choice of schools.

Your scholarship and fellowship support enables the School to remain competitive in recruiting top candidates and ensures that we accept and retain the caliber of student able to undertake the challenge of leading pharmaceutical care into the future.

Our goal: $1 million for student support

Program Support

UWSOP faculty and programs are recognized by the government, pharmaceutical industry and healthcare providers as the most innovative in the country. From advising the FDA to supporting local communities, our award-winning faculty and programs educate multi-disciplinary pharmacists and researchers who are committed to advancing pharmaceutical care in all areas of health services.

Your contribution enables our faculty and students to continue to develop and participate in important programs such as Direct Access, immunization training, and legislative affairs. With the explosion of drug products on the market, physicians and patients have come to rely on the expertise of the UWSOP faculty, who are trained to understand how drugs exert their effects, how they travel through the body, how they interact with one another, and best practices of how these drugs can be supplied, safely and cost-effectively, to diverse populations.

Our goal: $4 million for research and innovation

Annual Support

Private support is critical to the School of Pharmacy and its mission. Each gift, large or small, reflects the passion we all share-a vision for better pharmacy and better health, here and around the world. Annual support will go to these and other critical programs

  • Center for Pharmacy Leadership and Professional Excellence — the first of its kind at the University of Washington. Directed by Nanci Murphy, Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs, the Center will foster the development of pharmacy practitioners to lead the profession with vision, purpose and integrity.
  • Innovative programs such as I2P2 provide broader training, including pharmacy retail management, senior care specialties, and public services. I2P2 supports pharmacists who promote creative solutions for better health.
  • Need Based Scholarships increase the number of highly-qualified, underrepresented, economically and educationally disadvantaged students who pursue pharmacy careers at the University of Washington.
  • The Dean's Fund for Excellence provides pharmacy student scholarships and direct student support. With tuition of more than $10,000 a year, students — ;especially those with families — ;benefit from this critical support.

Not only will your gift support the School's curricula and resources, but will also directly help students through scholarship and fellowship funding. Here are a few examples of how financial aid has made a difference in the lives of UW students:

  • When you meet Stephanie Decker ('07), you are meeting a talented and confident pharmacist who is inspired to become an independent pharmacy owner, specializing in the science of compounding. The scholarship support that Stephanie received has allowed her to explore her talents and participate in student leadership programs. Stephanie has also had the opportunity to travel the world and met amazing pharmacists who have inspired her to know more about the field. Only due to scholarships has Stephanie truly been able to dedicate herself to her chosen profession.
  • George Guenther ('07) grew up a Husky fan. As an R&D chemist at a generic pharmaceutical, George knew the UW School of Pharmacy would be the perfect place to attend graduate school. His experience prepared him for the rigors of school, but the program's cost threatened to end George's dreams of being a pharmacist. With the help of alumni and friends of the University, scholarships have allowed George to concentrate on his studies and attend educational functions.
  • The scholarships that Michelle Akcar ('09) has received enabled her to work with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training, an organization dedicated to supporting blood cancer patients. Caring for lymphoma patients has furthered Michelle's understanding of living with cancer, and her career goals include helping underserved cancer patients across Washington. Michelle intends to serve in a rural hospital or clinical pharmacy and make community outreach the cornerstone of her practice.

Gifts to the Dean's Fund for Excellence allow the School to take advantage of promising opportunities, direct funds to valuable programs, and provide critical scholarship support to deserving students. For additional funds to support, click here.
