Make a gift online in support of the College of Engineering.
At the UW College of Engineering, we embrace a future filled with unlimited possibility. But creating the brightest tomorrow depends on having talented, highly motivated and enterprising people today. In order to nurture new ideas and life-changing discoveries, we must provide an environment of excellence for the most talented students and world-class faculty.
Your support of the College of Engineering allows us to be a center of learning and home to some of the world's most advanced research. Working in multidisciplinary teams to be innovators and inventors, our students and faculty are forging the future of engineering. The College of Engineering is taking on today's challenges by redefining not only the engineering discipline, but also the world in which we live.
Your support of the College of Engineering is especially critical as we expand educational opportunities to enhance our student experiences. Some of our most exciting developments include:
- Direct Admission for freshmen: Beginning fall 2009, select incoming freshman will be accepted into the College of Engineering and any of nine of our ten departments. Previously, the College could offer outstanding students early guaranteed admission to just some departments – this extends that virtually across the board. Dean O’Donnell pushed to make this happen because it helps attract the best students, and gives undergraduates the flexibility to discover their true passion.
- Molecular Engineering Building: The College recently broke ground for the nation's largest facility dedicated to the cross-disciplinary work of designing and synthesizing molecular systems. Molecular engineering will be central to complex societal problems including energy, health care, communications and computation.
- New Faculty Hires: Over the last two years we have attracted outstanding new faculty members to our departments. Trained at leading institutions around the world, these exceptional researchers and teachers will work across disciplines to advance engineering. From nanotechnology to photonics to human-computer interaction and design and beyond, this diverse and talented group will work collaboratively to tackle some of today’s most pressing issues.
Our Emerging Leaders program provides scholarships to exceptional students to support their education at UW and their goal to become leaders in the field. Here are a couple examples of our future engineers:
- David Colmenares (BS 2012) began building computers at the age of nine, in middle school he started writing programs, and in high school he built and designed robots for his school's robotics club. After graduating with an International Baccalaureate degree, David plans to enter the Computer Science & Engineering Department with the hope of studying robotics and computer networking and security.
- For Paul Buckley (BS 2012), engineering is the use of imagination and logic to better the community. With the goal of researching alternative power technologies, Paul studies electrical engineering to help create a cleaner world. As a freshman, Paul plans to join a research lab to make use of his independent drive for learning while taking part in group collaboration. These traits, in combination with his academic achievements, make Paul more than ready to join the COE community of innovators.
You can help make more success stories like these possible by making a gift. Your support will promote initiatives that strengthen the College of Engineering's position as a national leader in education and research.
