About the School

Dentistry PhotoWith a proud history of more than 50 years, the UW School of Dentistry looks to the future with strength, stability, and an ongoing commitment to excellence. We continue to move forward in our mission of education, research, patient care, and community service. Gifts to the School help further our goal to foster an environment of mutual respect where objectivity, imaginative inquiry, and the free exchange of ideas can flourish, facilitating personal development, professionalism, and a strong sense of self-worth.

Dentistry PhotoThe School of Dentistry is proud of its many accomplishments, particularly in enhancing and developing new programs that benefit students and the community we serve. Among these are:

  • Student rotations to outreach clinics that provide invaluable clinical experience for students, desperately needed oral-health education and care to underserved populations, and up-to-date information on research and dental treatment procedures for dental staff in rural-area clinics.
  • Pipeline programs such as UW Dental Camp that encourage the State's middle- and high-school students to pursue careers in oral health and other sciences.
  • Investment in internationally recognized faculty that offer students opportunities to become involved in research addressing challenging issues linked with oral craniofacial disorders and pathologies through such programs as the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship.

During Campaign UW, the School seeks funds to support students, faculty, and programs with a Campaign goal of $22.1 million. To learn more about our specific Campaign priorities, please contact the School of Dentistry.

Annual Support

The UW's School of Dentistry enjoys a reputation as one of the finest oral health institutions in the world due to its education of students, leading-edge research, and outreach programs that benefit communities throughout the region. Annual support to the School can help in so many ways, by providing:

  • Faculty support. Our faculty members are world leaders in oral health education and research but the School is facing fierce competition attracting and retaining this talented faculty.
  • Program support. In order to remain on the cutting edge, we must be able to fund promising research and innovative programs.
  • Building renovation. Our labs, classrooms, clinics and equipment are in critical need of updating if we are to teach, practice and research in an environment of excellence.

Not only will your gift support the College's programs and resources, but will also directly help students through scholarship and fellowship funding. Here are a few examples of how financial aid has made a difference in the lives of UW students:

  • Fourth-year dental student Juli Chue chose the University of Washington for her dental school education not only for its great reputation but also for its proximity to her family. At age two, she and her family emigrated from Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge regime and have lived in Washington state ever since. "I decided to attend the UW because my family lives in the Seattle-Tacoma area and I wanted to be close to my family." On receiving the Dental Alumni Association Student Scholarship, she noted, "It's a great feeling to know that there are so many people and organizations that care and are contributing to my endeavors toward my career and educational goals. It definitely gives me the desire to give back to the school and community once I have established myself in my career."
  • For husband and fourth-year dental student Mike Bowman, a dental education presents both a financial challenge and a familial obligation. Mike always wanted to attend the school from which his dad graduated in 1972. His work as an analyst at Boeing and Honeywell prepared him to set goals and attending the School of Dentistry was his top priority. But achieving that goal wasn't easy. "We had to adjust to the financial changes." he said, and the funds provided by the Dental Alumni Student Scholarship Fund have helped him do just that. "This was all made possible by UW alumni and I am excited for this unique opportunity"
  • Growing up in a single-parent family half a world away, Greece native and fourth-year dental student, Leroy Horton, yearned to influence public health policy. After LeRoy and his mom immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Federal Way, he earned an undergraduate degree at a private college-and accumulated a sizable school loan debt. Given his aspirations to enroll in dental school and "help improve the community's dental health", LeRoy chose the School of Dentistry for the great reputation of its academic program. Thankfully, the UW Dental Alumni Association provided scholarship support, due in large part to the generosity of previous alumni donors.

During a time when we are increasingly challenged to do more with fewer dollars, private support is imperative. Your unrestricted gift to the Dentistry Dean's Fund for Excellence allows the Dean to provide critical funds to offer scholarships and meet emerging needs as they arise, improving the excellence of the School and the University.
