Mission

The mission of the Development Office of the University of Washington Press is twofold: to raise awareness of the Press, both within the University and in the community at large, and to establish an endowment fund of at least $6 million that will provide financial stability for the Press and enable it to maintain and enhance its publishing program.

Development Advisory Board

The University of Washington Press is supported by a 21-member volunteer Development Advisory Board created to assist the Press in fulfilling its mission of publishing scholarly books of enduring value. The Advisory Board was established in 1988 and consists of community leaders who share a love of books.

The leadership and support of our Development Advisory Board have been critical to our fundraising success so far, including the completion of our first NEH challenge grant of $1,000,000 and our second one of $880,000.

NEH Challenge Grants

The University Press Endowment now totals $2.8 million and was originally established in 1989 through a successful fundraising campaign to match the Press's first National Endowment for the Humanities challenge grant. The purpose of the endowment was to publish scholarly books in the humanities. The first grant from the federal government was for $250,000, which the Press met with $750,000 raised in a 3-to-1 match for a total of $1,000,000.

A second challenge grant from the NEH was awarded to the University of Washington Press in December 1993. The purpose of the $176,000 grant was to support our program of publishing scholarly books in the humanities dealing with Asia, Asian America, Russia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. According to the terms of the grant, the Press raised $4 in non-federal funds for every $1 we received from the government.

All gifts to the University of Washington Press qualify as gifts to the University of Washington.
