The spirit of generosity has been a defining force at the University of Washington since a gift of land enabled the institution’s founding in 1861.

Ten acres on a knoll in what is now the heart of downtown Seattle, given to the Territory by the pioneering Denny, Terry and Lander families, provided the means for the birth of a territorial university in Washington. Today, more than 140 years later, philanthropy continues to advance the UW’s reach and impact and extend the boundaries of learning, research and inquiry. The University of Washington is indebted to the contributors listed in this Report and to all who have followed in the footsteps of the Denny, Terry and Lander families, whose remarkable contributions continue to create enduring benefits for the University, its faculty, staff, students and the greater community.
